Countless people have found themselves tightening their belts thanks to inflation and more than a few other areas. Unfortunately, their salaries just aren’t keeping up with it. But, that doesn’t always need to mean cutting down more and more. Here are 7 practical side hustles you can start from home.

Making a little more money helps prevent that, which is where side hustles come in. They’re easy to work around your job and other responsibilities while still offering a noticeable income. When done correctly, they could help improve your finances.

But, not all of them will be as appealing or as practical as others. Some could stand out compared to others for more than a few reasons. Seven of them could be tempting picks.

Blogging

One of the more obvious low-cost side hustles you can go for is blogging, and there are plenty of reasons why. As well as being low cost, it’s quick and easy to create a blog, you can blog about whichever topics you like – see my niche selector tool below – and bringing in a readerbase could be relatively straightforward, as long as you give it time.

Then there’s how much you can make from blogging. You’ll have more than a few ways to monetize it, such as affiliate products and sponsored posts, so you could end up earning well from it. It’ll take a bit of time to build up a large and engaged enough audience to do this, but it can pay off well.

Property Management

Property management can be a relatively broad area that includes quite a few tasks, jobs, and more, making it a great area to focus on with a side hustle. Managing it from home mightn’t even be too much of an issue, as you can manage contractors, landlord agreements, the rental application process, and more from a home office.

That’s especially true if you’re focusing more on key property management services and similar areas. Since the rental market is always in-demand, this could be one of the more sustainable options you can go for. If you live in a relatively populated area, there’ll be quite an income potential.

Beware: My main source of income has, for a long time, been from residential property. However, here in the UK, government regulations implemented in 2026 make it extremely risky, with punitive fines issued for small breaches of even slightly incorrectly issued paperwork. I have no experience of property management outside the UK, but the link to the rental application process above looks to be well run.

Tutoring

If you’ve got skills and expertise in certain areas, you could create a decent side hustle as a tutor. That’s especially true when it comes to specialized subjects in the academics, sports, and fine arts areas. These are always in-demand during the school year, making it a great way to make an extra income for most of the year.

It’s just a matter of focusing on a subject you actually have expertise in. The people you’ll end up tutoring will usually be looking for classes so they can pass an exam or finish a college year, for example. You’ll need to help them get to that point. Once you’re able to, you can start tutoring online or in-person, whichever’s best for your needs.

Pet Sitting

Animal lovers have more than a few options for both careers and side hustles, and more than a few of them stand out. When it comes specifically to side hustles, though, pet sitting could be one of the more obvious options to go for. It’s easier to work around your current responsibilities while still being an animal-focused option.

It could be a lot easier to break into than many people assume, as long as you’ve got the space to pet sit. When you have built up trust with owners, they may ask you to be a ‘live-in’ pet sitter, looking after their house as well as their pets.

Local ads, like flyers around your neighborhood, could be more than enough to get started, and then personal recommendations. If there are plenty of working professionals and similar people with pets nearby, this could end up making more of a side income than you would’ve thought.

Cautions: Be sure you are well insured. Here in the UK, pet owners ask to see insurance before they will entrust their fur-baby to a stranger.

Selling Artisanal Products

Artisanal products always have a good demand, and they seem to be growing in popularity more and more. People see them as better quality and worth a higher price than alternative products, which could make this an interesting path to go down. You could sell artisanal products either online or at markets or even as ‘party-plan’.

While that means spending time and money to create these products, this could be more than worth it if you’ve always enjoyed being a creative and hands-on person. You’ll need to put some work into marketing and similar areas to get started, but there’s no reason why this wouldn’t pay off in time.

Podcasting

Countless new podcasts are released every year, and it’s easy to see why. When they create a large and engaged enough audience, they can generate a regular income. And, you’ll get to focus on an area you’re passionate about. This could end up being one of the more interesting side hustles to go for.

The trick here is to actually invest in your podcast. While you can technically make one with a low-cost camera and similar equipment, going for higher quality options makes a difference. You’ll create a better podcast because of it, which should help bring in new listeners, linking directly to how much you can make out of it.

Online Courses & Coaching

People used to traditionally think that courses and coaching had to be done in person, especially when it comes to comprehensive studies. It’s why in-person college attendance continues to thrive. But, offering online courses and coaching services continues to become more and more popular, especially in certain sectors.

There are plenty of online platforms to offer these courses through. It’s just a matter of being skilled enough and experienced enough in whichever area you’re offering these courses in. Draw from your career with these and focus on specific areas so you can keep creating new courses to increase your income potential.

Conclusion and My Own Experience

Needing to make a little extra money on top of your current job is an unfortunate position to be in. But, it doesn’t need to be an impossible one. Once you have one setup and bringing a bit of income, you can move onto the next. This is especially relevant with blogging and affiliate marketing.

While some of them mightn’t be practical or appropriate for your circumstances, several others may stand out. There’s no reason why implementing them wouldn’t help you loosen your belt in time.

In my semi-retirement I have combined blogging (here!) with affiliate marketing, selling a combination of products in different niches, mostly digital affiliate products, so that I don’t have to buy or create products myself.

Below is a tool to help you get started in blogging and affiliate marketing as a side hustle.

It’s a free tool, so give it a try and let me know if it helps. AINicheScout.com
